Facing Reality

From a Yahoo link to comments from Meridith Small on marriage titled Denial Can Bring Marital Bliss:

Happy marriages might just be those in which both partners uphold a very nice projection of each other, even when things aren't so great. And this makes sense. Happiness is a state of mind, and if denial paints a partner better than they really are, the relationship is bound to be satisfying, as long as no one is slapped in the face with reality.

While this may be true for some marriages, it leaves out what I think is an important and more likely reason many couples stay together. It is not denial but rather an acceptance of the fact that no one is perfect and the positives out weigh the negatives significantly. Small seems to be suggesting that happy couples are either a very lucky minority or living in denial. Perhaps a slap in the face with reality is overdue for someone.
