The rift between American men and women widens
Dennis Prager has done yeoman's work in his lecture on male sexuality emphasizing the need to explain to women how men think and why it is important to understand this. Unfortunately, it is a topic which is often ignored which leads to misunderstanding and anger. Also, adding to this general confusion about wants and needs is the romantication of male behavior in the eyes of girls.
Diego: Such men, as described above in movies/TV, and their qualities that women find attractive are as real as the women with fake boobs and other surgical alterations. If women would like to know why men can't be like the guys in the movies made for women it is for the same reason they can't grow boobs like the women in the movies made for men. It is not natural.
At least Angel, Anita Blake's vampires, Sookie Stackhouse, and most of the rest of them have a lot of sex. But Edward Cullen, immortal star of the Twilight books, does not have sex. Edward tells Bella, his human paramour, that they need to wait until they're married before doing the deed. In the meantime, he's fascinated by her, beguiled by her, he can't stay away from her—but he can't touch her. Instead, he lies next to her in bed and moons over her as she sleeps. Leaving aside the fact that he's a 90-year-old man, this is what stalkers do, not boyfriends.
Just as America's young men are being given deeply erroneous ideas about sex by what they watch on the Web, so, too, are America's young women receiving troubling misinformation about the male of the species from Twilight. These women are going to be shocked when the sensitive, emotionally available, poetry-writing boys of their dreams expect a bit more from a sleepover than dew-eyed gazes and chaste hugs. The young man, having been schooled in love online, will be expecting extreme bondage and a lesbian three-way.
Understanding comes from honesty. Men need to be encouraged to be honest about their expectations and women should learn not to be over romanticize relationships.

3,000 Low Temp Records Set This July!
There is a reason they stopped calling it global warming and started calling it climate change. You see the globe is not warming but the climate always changes. They win!Update: Recent data suggests that the trend in global temperatures is lower.
The Hadley Centre for Climate Change, part of the UK Met Office, tracks global temperature and shows a big drop in global temperature anomalies since January 2007. Based on the HadCRUT3 system of observed temperatures, global surface temperature anomalies have been trending down since 2001. January 2008 had the coldest anomaly since 1995.
Of course that could be caused by some exogenous factor and that is offsetting anthropogenic global warming.

Obama is the best thing that ever happened to conservatives Part 1
I thought the same of Bill Clinton in 1992 and he was fairly good news in that he soured the American people on the Democrats and managed to lose both houses of congress. Unfortunately, he triangulated his way to a second term. Still he did not accomplish much and what he did accomplish I supported: NAFTA, welfare reform, making sexual harassment cool again.
Obama has all the potential of a Bill Clinton, that is to turn Americans against liberal policies, without Bill Clinton's political savvy. Who will be Barack's Dick Morris? I doubt he has the instincts to survive. Why do I say that? Because he has had a pretty charmed political life so far. Bill Clinton had the scars of lost campaigns and various scandals. Like him or not, Clinton is a survivor. Obama is more of an ideologue and he is surrounded by ideologues who will strongly discourage him from the necessary course correction. I could be wrong about his character. Nothing like getting clobbered in the polls to wake you up to your own folly.
I have been optimistic about conservatives chances since the election because I know that this recession is not your typical recession. We are going through a long debt cause asset price deflation and there is no cure other than to have prices fall to a level that brings in the smart money. I don't think we are there yet. Also, I know that Barack Obama is a true believer and he will keep pushing statist policies that will have no effect on deflation. In fact, increasing the power of the gov't is only going to stiffle business. Unemployment will keep rising and so will dissatisfaction with Obama. From this I knew Obama was doomed. I think his only chance is to fess up to his mistakes and tell the American people the truth about what is happening to the economy.
Do you think he is going to do that? He's doomed and it is his fault.

Someone's 11
But not mine anymore.
Car #11 was sold yesterday, I'll be looking at a new car this evening. I owned this one longer than any of the other 10, just short of six years. I'll always remember the first but this one has some memories and several good road trips. I didn't 'chase the sun around the world' but I did drive east to the Atlantic and as far west as Yellowstone National Park in that car and many places in between.

One Game, Four Baseballs
In 30+ years I never got a ball at a baseball game. Last month I finally got one in batting practice (thank you Matt Holliday). Last night I went to the game straight from work and arrived early enough for batting practice and had 4 balls bounce my way. No elderly or children were harmed in the process of obtaining them, there was just me, an elderly child laughing in disbelief.
While they look nice sitting atop the fireplace in the living room I suspect they might not be there very long.

Is Palin the Real Maverick?
I'm not guessing at Sarah Palin's next move after stepping down as Alaska's Governor but if she is going to run for President in 2012, I think the GOP needs her more than she needs them. Republicans are still not taking a strong stance against Obama, the Democrats and big government policies. I'm not sure if they are afraid of the media or just want to maintain the current system only with more loot for themselves. Either way they will not make any significant political gains with their current strategy. They will lose the same way they lost the last election.
The opportunity lies with either a conservative GOP or an independent. Palin could be that independent if the GOP does not follow that path. She could run herself or she could simply begin a campaign that pulls the Republicans back to the right and then support them in the end. That would be in line with her current reasoning for stepping down as governor, she does not seek higher office to satisfy self serving desires. She wants to make a difference but she does not need to be President to accomplish that.

The fact that I've heard this more often lately in global warmongering arguments suggests that public opinion is swinging in favor of sanity. The last line of defense is to suggest that if 'the scientists' are wrong it will only cost us money but if they are right and we do not act then the doomsday scenario will occur.
I've heard a concession that they might not be right but it is just not worth the risk. I think that the risk assessment is being reevaluated more and more and the result is that the key factor, the 'settled science', is being considered less reliable as time goes on.
