Sugar can disrupt basic brain function
Researchers at UCLA have found that a diet high in sugar can disrupt the memory and learning functions of the brain, while omega-3 fatty acids can actually counteract said disruption. High-fructose corn syrup, in particular, creates problems. The liquid is six times sweeter than cane sugar and, as you've probably heard, commonly added to soft drinks and processed foods. The average American actually consumes more than 40 pounds of this stuff every year.
I have been staying away from sugar for about 12 years for the most part although I have been more serious about it for the last year and a half. Sugar just makes me put on weight. I can't say it makes me dumber but I would be the last person to ask about that.
Zillow Adds 1.8M Foreclosed And Pre-Foreclosure Homes To Its Real Estate Listings
Online real estate service Zillow is expanding its real estate listings today by adding “pre-market inventory” — specifically, homes that have either been foreclosed or are in the foreclosure process.
Increasing the selection of available homes is particularly important now, Zillow says, because the inventory of for-sale homes listed on the site has fallen by 20 percent over the past year. The company suggests that there’s already considerable interest from homebuyers in this kind of product, citing a study by the National Association of Realtors, which found that 55 percent of homeowners have considered purchasing a foreclosed home but don’t know how to find those listings or are discouraged by the complexity of the transaction.

The Future of America Is Japan: Runaway Deficits, Runaway Debts
Now take a look at the 2012 United States federal budget. Net interest on the $16 trillion national debt is "only" $242 billion, while Social Security costs totaled $778 billion. So far, debt and Social Security ($1 trillion) are "only" 40% of total tax revenues, but like Japan, rapidly rising debt will increase interest while a rapidly increasing population of retirees qualifying for Social Security will drive those costs dramatically higher in the years ahead.
Given $2.47 trillion in total tax revenues, $3.8 trillion in expenditures and a deficit of $1.3 trillion, 34% of the Federal budget is borrowed money. We are borrowing 52% of total tax revenues.
Does anyone seriously think this is the "road to recovery"?If you want a look at the fiscal future of the U.S., look west to Japan, a nation that sits precariously on a fiscal cliff a thousand feet high.

I've never seen a candidate self-destruct for no external reason this late in a campaign before. Gore was better in his first debate - and he threw a solid lead into the trash that night. Even Bush was better in 2004 than Obama last week. Even Reagan's meandering mess in 1984 was better - and he had approaching Alzheimer's to blame.

Why Fat People Can’t Help Getting Even Fatter
New research has found that a type of anti-tumour immune cell protects against obesity and the metabolic syndrome that leads to diabetes. Results showing that immune cells known to be protective against malignancy called invariant natural killer T-cells (iNKT), that are lost when humans become obese, but can be restored through weight loss, have been published online this week in the journalImmunity. Marie Curie Fellow, Lydia Lynch at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland made the discovery and as first author in collaboration with colleagues at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, and St Vincent’s University Hospital have shown that therapies that activate iNKT cells could help manage obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disease.

Next, the authors removed iNKT cells from a normal mouse and injected them into obese NKT-deficient mice.
“We actually reversed the diabetes, and even though the mice continued to eat a high-fat diet, they lost one to two grams of weight [normal mouse weight being 20 to 25 grams] and exhibited a host of features that suggested reduced inflammation, including improved insulin sensitivity, lower triglycerides and leptin, and shrunken adipocytes,” Dr Lynch said.
Finally, in order to demonstrate if the remaining diminished pool of iNKT cells in obesity could be activated to improve metabolism, the scientists tested aGC, a lipid known to activate iNKT cells. They found that administering a single dose of aGC caused a dramatic improvement in metabolism and fatty liver disease, loss of much of the weight gained, and reversal of diabetes in the obese animals.
“aGC has been tested in clinical trials for the treatment of certain cancers, including melanoma, and proven safe and produced few side effects in humans,” said Exley. “The effect of NKT stimulation, whether by aGC or other means, on weight loss, obesity, and metabolic disorder has not been investigated until now and may provide a new avenue for the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome, which have now reached epidemic proportions worldwide.”

Dr. Barbara Bellar with a pretty darn impressive resume is running in Beverly for the Illinois state senate. And she is funny.
And Obama is losing the Chicago suburbs. This does not shock me as much as it does the author of this article.

A new poll of Illinois' 10th Congressional District, which includes parts of Cook County, however, suggests the August poll might not be such an aberration. The poll, from WeAskAmerica, finds Obama with just a 2 point lead over Romney, 47-45 in the suburban district. Obama won the district in 2008 by 23 points.
